Police arrest a man over yesterday's murder in Mitcham

Police have arrested a 47 year old man in connection with a murder in Mitcham.

A woman in her 40's was found dead at the back on the Peacocks clothing store on Majestic Way.

The suspect was arrested early this morning but police have not revealed his identity.

It's believed the victim died from stab wounds to the neck and heart.

A murder investigation is launched in Mitcham, writes Lucy Mayer
Police are investigating after a woman was attacked at Peacocks on Majestic Way earlier this afternoon.

The woman in her 40s was found seriously injured in a back area of the clothing shop.

It's thought she had been stabbed in the neck and heart.

Anyone with information is urged to phone the Police incident room on 020 8721 4205.

Concerns over Springfield development in Tooting
People living near Springfield mental hospital in Tooting have voiced their concerns over transformation plans.

Residents are opposed to the plans which include a thousand new flats, shops, offices and restaurants.

The development plans have been submitted to Wandsworth Council –

by South West London and St George’s Mental Health Trust.

If plans go ahead it means the area could be swamped with up to three thousand new residents.

A man dies in a Roehampton fire
A man’s died at a flat fire in Roehampton.

A small part of the bungalow on Danebury Avenue was damaged by the blaze this afternoon.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Chelsea's new boss watches from the stands
New Chelsea boss Guus Hiddink will watch on from the stands when they take on Watford in the FA Cup this weekend.

Ray Wilkins will be in charge of the team.

He's sad that Luiz Felipe Scolari lost his job, and says the Brazilian enjoyed his time in charge of an English team.

Woman jailed for taking drugs into a Woking prison
A woman’s been jailed for taking drugs into a prison near Woking.

Twenty-three year-old Michelle Barnes from Brighton received a 2 year sentence for taking items into Coldingley prison.

She went to visit an inmate and while she was sitting down at a table in the visitor’s section she was found to be in possession of a quantity of drugs and a mobile phone memory card.

The drugs consisted of four individual wraps of Heroin, five wraps of crack Cocaine and one wrap of Cannabis.

Middlesex have signed a new opening batsman.

20 year old Australian Philip Hughes will join on a six week short contract.

The left hander recently celebrated a call up to the Australian test side.

A couple marry at Thorpe Park
A pair of horror enthusiasts have tied the knot - on a rollercoaster.

Dressed in Gothic clothing, Karl and Gaynor Anderson exchanged wedding vows on an extreme ride, based on the film series Saw.

And they deliberately chose Friday 13th as the day to tie the knot at Thorpe Park.

The couple met nine years ago at a Halloween party.

No bail hostels in Wimbledon
The MP for Wimbledon has been told there are no bail hostels being established in his constituency.

Stephen Hammond had written to the Minister of State following rumour about the prospect of one being built in Merton.

An orbital rail network gets the green light
An orbital rail network for London has been given the green light.

Transport Secretary Geoff Hoon announced approval of the extension of the East London Line from Surrey Quays to Clapham Junction.

The new line will connect Highbury in the North of the Capital to West Croydon and Clapham Junction in the South.

The expansion is expected to be completed in time for the 2012 Games.

Scolari sees ahead
It looks like Luiz Felipe Scolari for shadowed his departure from Chelsea.

The influential France Football magazine publishes an interview today which was conducted with the Brazilian before he was fired.

Scolari said he had no personal relationship with the players beyond the training ground, and complains about a lack of creative stars.

He also said he wasn't afraid of getting the sack.

Sutton Council Tax increase
Sutton Council's rate setters say they've worked hard to keep tax increases to a minimum this year.

The rise of 2.9% works out at just over 60 pence for the average Band D home.

The modest increase is partly thanks to a freeze on the rate set by the Mayor's of London.

MP for Sutton & Cheam Paul Burstow urged the council to carefully consider residents' pockets when setting this year's rates.

Police find missing West Drayton man
Police have found a vulnerable man missing from his home in West Drayton.

59 year old James O’Tool has epilepsy and alzeimers and disappeared on Wednesday.

Officers say he’s safe and well.

Chelsea make big pay outs
In a week when they've sacked another boss, Chelsea have revealed they paid out 23-million pounds in compensation in getting rid of previous coaching staff.

They had to shell out when they let managers Jose Mourinho and Avram Grant go, as well as five other coaches.

Financial results for the year up to the end of June 2008 have revealed club losses of nearly 66-million pounds.

Heathrow fares badly in poll
Heathrow rates as the worst major international airport for queuing on arrival and baggage problems.

It was voted worse than either JFK in New York or Los Angeles for delays in getting through passport control, in a poll by networking site W-A-Y-N dot com.

But Heathrow was second best for security - behind New York's Kennedy airport.

A first for Epsom Derby Organisers
Organisers of the Epsom Derby are struggling to find a sponsor, for the first time in the history of the event.

The derby's long standing sponsor Vodafone pulled out after 13-years of partnering the festival – in a move to cut costs during the recession.

Prior to this summer's national event, Epsom will unveil a new grandstand in April.

Flood warning to riverside homes
Heavy rain and strong winds have prompted the Environment Agency to sound the alarm to those living near rivers.

Hundreds of flood warnings have been issued.

Those near the Thames between Shepperton & Molesey are warned that flooding is expected.

Also people between Putney Bridge and Teddington Weir should be aware of an increased risk to low lying land.

MPs push for Council tax freeze in Sutton
Residents in Sutton may be getting a helping hand with the credit crunch.

MP for Sutton and Cheam Paul Burstow and MP Tom Brake have requested that Sutton Council do everything possible to insure that council tax does not drastically rise.

They expressed their concerns about the rising cost of living in a letter to the council and says they aim to ensure Sutton is treated fairly by the government.

Thames water staff balloted on strike action
There could be strike action at the country's biggest water company.

The GMB union's considering balloting its members at Thames Water in disputes over job cuts and working hours.

Bosses have announced 300 posts are to go because of the recession.

TV chef shuts Barnes restaurant

TV chef Anthony Worral Thompson has been forced to close one of his restaurants in South West London, because of the credit crunch.

He visited workers at the Barnes Grill, as well as staff at three of his other restaurants on Friday to tell them his company had been placed into administration.

The Ready Steady Cook star has been forced used a quarter-of-a-million pounds of his own cash to save two of his restaurants from closure – including the Kew Grill.

Shepperton film studios scoops an award

Shepperton Studios was honoured at the BAFTAs last night – winning an award for Outstanding British Contribution to Cinema.

The studios are part of the famous Pinewood facilities – and has been host to famous film scenes since the 1930s.

In recent years, the studios have been used for the shooting of Bond Films – as well as the new-look Gladiators TV show.

Balham residents return home following gas leak
Hundreds of people in Balham have returned home after being evacuated by police early this morning

Officers used buses to move people from dozens of homes after a major gas leak.
