Wimbledon Common murder could prove costly for Met Police

Scotland Yard could be forced to pay out thousands of pounds in compensation after a new report has claimed the Metropolitan Police Force could have prevented the murder of young mum Rachel Nickell on Wimbledon Common in 1992.

Police are expected to ofdfer a six figure sum to her partner Andre Hanscombe and his son Alex, who witnessed his mother's brutal death, as a toddler.

23 year old part time model Rachel, was stabbed 49 times and sexually assaulted while she and two-year-old Alex took their dog Molly for a walk in July 1992.

Loner Colin Stagg was charged with her murder after being set up in a 'honeytrap' by investigating officers. He was later cleared and handed a compensation pay out of over £700, 000.

Following a DNA breakthrough in 2008, Broadmoor patient Robert Napper was charged with her murder after admitting manslaughter on the grounds of diminished responsibility. He is being held indefinitely following a ruling by a Judge.

Rachel's partner Andre is expected to get a formal apology from the Met in the coming weeks. However no officers will be disciplined over the 'botched' investigation, which took 16 years to solve, as they have retired.
