Stars of stage and screen turn out in force for Shooting Star’s big birthday bash

Special guests including West End star Michael Ball, Spandau Ballet frontman Tony Hadley, comedian Bobby Davro and television personalities Laurence and Jackie Llewelyn-Bowen have helped celebrate the fifth birthday of The Shooting Star Children’s Hospice with a glittering party at The Great Conservatory at Syon House on 1 July.

Tony Hadley entertained guests with an exclusive live set, and was later presented with a giant birthday cake – created by Anthony Marshall, Executive Chef at The Hilton on Park Lane – in celebration of his own birthday. He turned 50 last month.

Hadley said Shooting Star’s fifth birthday is a significant milestone in the charity’s history. ‘It is fantastic to be celebrating our fifth birthday,’ he said. ‘When I was first invited to be involved with Shooting Star it felt like a great honour, and it still does. If I can sing a few songs to raise a few quid for a cause like this, that’s good with me, but what I do is little compared to the work the staff do, either caring for these families first-hand or raising enough money to keep the place running.’

Shooting Star, which provides care, support and advice for life-limited children and their families across the western half of London and north Surrey, opened its hospice doors in Hampton in 2005. Five years on, the charity continues to support more than 250 families across London. Care services are provided free of charge to families, so the charity needs to raise £3.5 million every year in order to continue its work.
