Diabetes under the spotlight in Croydon
The diabetes clinic at ‘Mayday’ hospital will have its ‘15 minutes of fame’ next Monday, when it plays the star role in the Channel 4 series The Hospital.
In a five-part series, The Hospital looks at the impact of our young generation on the NHS.
One in five of the patients in being treated in hospital in Croydon is here because of diabetes. The programme follows Croydon Health Services diabetes team and a number of young patients who use the service. It illustrates the difficulties in treating young diabetics and the challenge for staff in raising awareness of the condition with their patients and its relationship with their lifestyle choices.
Dr Richard Savine said: “There are 15 to16,000 diabetics in Croydon, which is an awful lot of people. I rarely think about it in those terms though, I’d probably go mad if I started thinking about the size of the problem.”
Treating diabetes and its complications is estimated to cost £1 million every hour and due to increasingly poor diet and a lack of exercise, type 2 diabetes is being picked up in increasingly younger patients, with a new diabetic being diagnosed every three minutes in the UK.
