Kingston Hospital’s cancer centre celebrates award

The Sir William Rous Unit in Kingston Hospital is one of the first in the country to be awarded the new Macmillan Quality Environment Mark Award for offering high standards of care to people affected by cancer.

The award was launched in January by the charity Macmillan Cancer Support and is the only award which specifically assesses how well buildings such as chemotherapy and palliative units provide support and care to people affected by cancer.

Environments have to score highly in categories, such as use of space, comfort and atmosphere, personal and social interaction and health and well being.

Consideration is given to such things as the greeting people receive when they come to a centre, the use of natural light and outdoor space, and the availability of quiet, private rooms – all areas that were highlighted as very important by people living with cancer who helped develop the award.

To celebrate, the Sir William Rous Unit hosted an event on 23 September 2010, which was attended by volunteers, people affected by cancer, Kingston Hospital and Macmillan staff, as well as local MPs Zac Goldsmith and Ed Davey.

The award was presented by Macmillan’s Senior Development Manager, Helen Liles to Archana Sood, Macmillan Cancer Information and Support Manager at Kingston Hospital, who said:
