Sutton Police to the rescue!

Police officers took part in a number of snow rescues using Sutton’s marked police 4x4 Mitsubishi Shogun this week.

The first was at 2pm on Tuesday, when officers on routine patrol spotted a blind woman with her dog.

The woman, aged in her 30s, had become stranded at Carshalton railway station on her way home from work. The officers gave the woman and her dog a lift to her home a few streets away in the area of Lower Road, Sutton.

Some 3 - 4 hours later the same officers and police vehicle gave a man, aged in his 30s, a lift to St Helier Hospital Sutton after he had slipped in the snow and broken his leg crossing Stafford Road, Wallington.

The officers, who were on patrol in the area, made a makeshift stretcher out of a builder’s board they found nearby. "The man had been waiting some time for an ambulance and we used the police vehicle to take him to hospital so he could be treated," said Insp Hinks.

Police in Sutton also took a surgeon stuck in gridlocked, snowbound traffic to hospital for a life saving operation.

The surgeon was in a queue of traffic in Park Road, Carshalton, when he approached a marked police vehicle on routine patrol in the area.

The surgeon explained that he had to get to St Helier Hospital, Sutton, to operate on a critically ill patient. He said the patient was bleeding internally and it was important he got there as quickly as possible.

The surgeon had been called at his home in Purley at around 7.30am this morning to go to the hospital, but had spent the next two hours in traffic and had only got as far as Carshalton by 9.45am.
