Clegg visits Croydon

The Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg was in Croydon on Friday visiting victims of last August’s riots.

House of Reeves was burned to the ground after 150 years in business.

The family has often said they want those involved to take responsibility for their actions.

Mr Clegg spent time looking at the old site which is slowly being rebuilt, as well as talking to the family in their temporary store across the road.

Jackie's Lucy Mayer asked the Deputy Prime Minister if he felt justice was being done.

Mr Clegg was accompanied by Lib Dem London Mayoral Candidate Brian Paddick and Carshalton and Wallington's MP Tom Brake.

He told Radio Jackie that on the night of the riots last August, London's Mayor should have been on the scene, and he is giving his full backing to Brian Paddick in his race for the top job. The elections take place in May.

Mr Clegg said Mr Paddick, who grew up in nearby Sutton, is perfect for the role because of his work within the police force.

Charity workers were also invited to meet the Deputy PM and put forward their views.

One of those in attendance was Tony Harrison, from the Croydon African and Caribbean Family Organisation, or CACFO.

He is keen to press ahead with the rehabilitation of rioters so they won’t turn to crime again.
