Call off the hospital closure chaos now

Cllr Mary Burstow, Chair of Sutton Council’s Scrutiny Committee, has demanded that controversial plans to close St Helier Hospital’s A&E and maternity wards are abandoned immediately.
Two hospitals from four - St Helier, Croydon, Epsom and Kingston - face losing the vital wards as a result of the Better Services Better Value healthcare review.
BSBV is due to issue its recommendations on the 21st of February ahead of a three-month public consultation, but Cllr Burstow is calling for the ‘rushed’ process to be scrapped now before it damages healthcare in the region for generations to come.
The first BSBV review collapsed in October last year because NHS Surrey insisted on assessing its impact on their residents. The first plan was also heavily criticised for its failure to identify how care would be provided in the community once an A&E department was closed.
The Jubilee Health Centre which opened in Wallington last year was intended to be part of the solution to that problem, but it has suffered serious teething problems in its first few months.
The second BSBV - which expanded the programme to include Epsom Hospital and also said that two A&Es must close instead of the one under threat previously - has been dogged by accusations that it has been rushed from the outset.
