Oxford has beaten Cambridge to win the 159th Boat Race.

Previous coverage below;

Today's boat race is being patrolled by Royal Marines.

It follows the problems last year when demonstrator Trenton Oldfield swam into the path of the race at Chiswick in protest.

Oldfield was released from prison in December having served seven weeks of a six-month sentence after being found guilty of causing a public nuisance.

The competition between Oxford and Cambridge universities had to be halted and Oldfield narrowly avoiding being struck by an Oxford oar.

The race had to be re-started.

Marines will be stationed in inflatable boats along the length of the course to ensure the event is not disrupted.

Some key facts include;

*Cambridge lead head-to-head 81-76
*75 of 148 wins from Middlesex station
*Oxford crew weight: 757.6kg, Cambridge: 736.4kg

The weather hasn't put anyone off, thousands are already lining the Thames, despite the fact some of the banks are waterlogged and the wind is bitterly cold.

A doctor will also be on hand following last year's shock collapse of Oxford rower Dr Alex Woods at the end of last year's race. He is rowing in the reserve team this year.

A short time ago, Oxford won the toss. The race starts at 4.30pm. Listen live 107.8 Radio Jackie on air and on the web
