The Duchess of Cambridge has given birth to a baby boy weighing 8lbs 6oz. The baby will be known as the Prince of Cambridge. The first time the title has been used in over 100 years.

Kate gave birth at 4.24pm. Palace sources said the couple chose to delay the release of the news by four hours to allow them to spend quality time together.

It is believed Prince William broke the news to The Queen, his father and brother.

In a statement, Clarence House said Mother and Child are doing well.

Kensington Palace decided to change protocol about the announcement of the birth, just before 8pm. A short time later, the news was announced by way of a statement, it was not until around an hour later that the news was posted traditionally on an easle outside Buckingham Palace.

Kate gave birth on the hottest day in seven years at the Lindo Wing of St Mary's Hospital in Paddington. The Duchess is expected to leave hospital in the next day or so, and retreat to her family home in Berkshire to be with her mother.

Speaking outside No 10, Prime Minister David Cameron said the nation should feel proud and it was a very special day for the warm and loving couple.

The baby is the first great - grandson for the Queen, Her Majesty already has two great grand - daughters.

Prince Charles has released a statement saying he is thrilled to have entered grandparenthood and he and his wife, the Duchess of Cornwall, are eagerly looking forward to seeing the baby in the near future.

Prince William will stay with his wife in hospital overnight.

The fountains at Trafalgar Square are running with blue water to mark the occasion as well as a gun salute, and all babies born today will also receive a special commemorative coin. The exciting news is also displayed on London's iconic BT tower tonight.
