£219million St Helier refurb ''will not go ahead''

MP for Mitcham and Morden, Siobhain McDonagh has today released information detailing the promised development of St Helier Hospital is no longer going ahead.

Following an enquiry from Siobhain, the Chief Officer of Merton Clinical Commissioning Group has revealed that the scheme is "unaffordable in the current financial context."

The CCG goes on to say "the re-development does not feature as one of the Long-Term Financial Modelling scenarios being worked up."

This is the letter sent to Ms McDonagh by Merton CCG earlier.

In response to your enquiry regarding the St Helier redevelopment monies, I have taken advice and can offer the detail as follows:

The Treasury approved the Outline Business Case (OBC) in March 2010 and therefore the Trust are able to progress this to Full Business Case (FBC) at any stage.

However, the FBC would need commissioner support (and that would mean that the content of the re-development and the activity and financial assumptions underpinning it are aligned with the majority commissioners 5 year Strategies) and any capital redevelopment of the size would incur a significant additional revenue cost for the local commissioners and would probably be unaffordable in the current financial context.

It is for this reason that the re-development does not feature as
one of the Long-Term Financial Modelling (LTFM) scenarios being worked up by the Trust at this stage.

I hope this helps to clarify the issue.

Jackie News has spoken to MP for Carshalton and Wallington, and St Helier campaigner, Tom Brake in the last ten minutes; he fears Ms McDonagh may have jumped the gun.
