Jewellery theft suspect leaves police in the picture

A suspected jewellery thief left his phone, including a picture of himself, at the scene of a crime and is now being sought by police in Kingston.

Detectives believe he may be linked to incidents at jewellery stores across London.

The latest shop targeted was Ernest Jones, Clarence Street, in Kingston where the suspect ran out of the shop with £18,000 of jewellery on Sunday.

However, in his speed to escape he left his phone behind which had his image as a screensaver, enabling police to identify him.

Police have identified as Germain Ibrahim Fofana, was posing as a customer interested in buying engagement rings for his female accomplice.

The pair entered the shop with a child in a buggy at about 1.45pm.

The suspect spoke to the shop assistant indicating they were interested in buying engagement rings.

The female then pointed out two rings she liked and wanted to look at. The couple then left the shop stating they were going to see jewellery at another store and would return later.

Approximately 30 minutes later the male suspect returned alone and asked the shop assistant who originally served him if he could look at both rings again as well as a wedding band.

He told the assistant that he wanted to compare the engagement rings with the wedding band to see which one it looked best with.

The shop assistant had no reason to believe the suspect was anything but genuine so she handed over the rings.

It was then the suspect ran out of the store with two engagement rings and the wedding ring, leaving behind his phone in a bag.
