Statement from Kingston Council on roadworks

"Traffic disruption in Kingston town centre and surrounding areas is being caused by road works and four-way temporary traffic lights at College Roundabout.

The works are being carried out by Thames Water Utility, who are installing new waste and surface water connections to the development at 1 Penrhyn Road. They are scheduled for completion by Tuesday.

Thames Water has a statutory right to carry out the work. The Council’s responsibility is to do what it can to minimise the disruption caused, coordinate them around other activities on the road and to ensure safe working practices are adhered to.

What have we done (and are doing) to try and minimise disruption:

The bulk of the works have been scheduled to take place during school half term, when there is a significant reduction in traffic volumes

We are meeting with the traffic management company to explore whether the site can be safely operated with a three-way traffic control, rather than the four-way control currently being used (the original plan was for three-way controls, but safety concerns when setting up the site led to a four-way control being put in place instead)

It has been agreed that from the evening of 28 May the signals will be manually controlled at peak times (7-10am and 4-7pm) to improve traffic flow

We apologise for any inconvenience caused by and will continue to work with Thames Water and their contractors to minimise the impact."
