Row over school site in Richmond

The location of a new primary school in Richmond is facing opposition, with more than 1000 people signing a petition against it.

Deer Park School is set to be built on the A316 at Manor Circus, on the site of London House, which will be demolished.

Those against it say the pollution levels are too high, it will cause too much traffic and the site is too small.

One of them is Andree Frieze, who’s proposed a different location.

You can listen to Andree's interview with us in full here.

Councillor Paul Hodgins has given us this statement.

The demand for school places has risen dramatically in recent years, and is continuing to rise. In Richmond, we have added over 500 permanent reception places since 2010, and we think over the next 5 to 10 we will have to add over 600 more. In most areas we have expanded all the schools we can, and we now need sites for whole new schools. This is a significant challenge, which boroughs across London are facing. There are no easy sites left. We spend significant time identifying possible sites and making them known to the EFA. If the EFA and new schools can avoid busy roads they of course do, but we have a number of schools in difficult locations that are safe and provide an excellent education. It is right that safety and health issues are raised, and we will work on behalf of residents with the school and the EFA to ensure they are fully accounted for in the design and planning process. But I am confident that Deer Park will be an excellent school.
