Update on the investigation into the death of schoolgirl Lavna Chuttoo

The investigation into the death of schoolgirl Lavna Chuttoo in New Malden, which could take six months to complete, has commenced after Kingston council launched an urgent review into the safety of the junction where she died.

The Coombe Girls’ Pupil died after falling under the wheels of an HGV at the junctions of Coombe Road and Lime Grove on her way to school on November the 17th.

The investigation will look at the road layout and hear from witnesses, many of whom were Lavna’s school friends.

Police say the young witnesses are traumatised, which could prolong the investigation.

The driver of the lorry wasn’t arrested at the scene, but residents of the small Groves area have been calling for a ban on HGVs using the Travis Perkins site, which has its exit in Lime Grove, and entrance in Coombe Road, during school times.

"Unsuitable for HGV" signs align the Groves, but residents say these are routinely ignored by drivers.

A petition calling for a safety review has also amassed more than 600 signatures.

Conservative MP for Kingston and Surbiton, James Berry, says he wasn't aware of residents'concerns about HGVs, but youngsters' safety is paramount.
