The murder of Asad Shah

A man's appeared in court charged with the murder of a popular shopkeeper in Glasgow.

Tanveer Ahmed from Bradford is accused of killing 40-year-old Asad Shah outside his convenience store in the Shawlands area of the city on Thursday night.

The 32-year-old made no plea or declaration and was remanded in custody.

Mr Shah was murdered on Thursday night.

It shocked the community and hundreds attended a tribute event to him on Friday.

Shah was an Ahmadi Muslim. Ahmadi's are an Islamic sect, founded in Pakistan in 1889.

There’s no definitive number of Ahmadi Muslims, but it is thought they are spread worldwide.

Many Ahmadi Muslims are based in South West London.

The Baitul Futuh Mosque, based in Morden, practices Ahmadiyya beliefs.

It is Britain’s largest mosque and one of the largest in Western Europe.

It has acted at the centre for the “Loyalty, Freedom and Peace Campaign” which seeks to promote Islam as a peaceful religion.

In a statement, a representative of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community said that they were shocked by the death of Mr Asad Shah and are praying for his family.
