The proposed closure of the Kingfisher crèche in Kingston is angering mums and dads

Kingfisher Leisure Centre, run by company Places for People, will close its crèche doors on the 15th of April.

Parents were sent a letter on the 15th of March detailing the plans.

The crèche is used partly by the parents of youngsters having swimming lessons, who need their other children supervised, and by others who place their under 5s in care while they attend the gym.

They say using another one of PfP's centres in Kingston is not an option, as Tolworth doesn't have a pool and New Malden is not practical time wise.

Mum Sian Jones says it would all have been a lot easier if Places for People had forewarned users and staff about its plans.

She's campaigning for a public consultation on the closure.

A Places for People Leisure spokesperson told Jackie News;

Following a 12-month review there will no longer be a crèche facility at Kingfisher Leisure Centre from Friday, 15 April 2016.

This decision, which has been approved by Kingston Council, has been given a great deal of consideration and is based on a significant decline in usage over recent months.

Places for People Leisure is committed to providing children’s activities for under 5s; we understand the need to deliver play for early years and beyond in order to encourage physical activity and we are currently looking at exciting new programmes for this age group.

We want the crèche room to remain available as a valuable space for the community and propose making full use of it by hosting a range of community activities and training courses.

We will continue to run crèche facilities at the nearby Malden Centre and Tolworth Leisure Centre, and parents who will be affected by the crèche closure are invited to transfer their membership to one of these centres, at no additional cost.”
