All of the dementia day-care centres run by the Alzheimer's Society across Surrey will be closing

The Alzheimer's Society is to close all its Surrey day centres blaming a lack of funding and declining attendance.

Centres in Byfleet and Haslemere are due to close in March with the Bletchingley centre closing in June.

Surrey County council stopped funding two years-ago and the service has been totally reliant on individuals paying.

South East's Area Manager, Chris Wyatt.

Jacqui Parfitt, Alzheimer’s Society Operations Manager for Surrey, said:

“After careful consideration, we have made the difficult decision to permanently close Haslemere Day Centre, St Mary’s in Byfleet, The Byre and Bletchinley.

People with dementia and their carers are always at the forefront of our minds and we try to avoid closures wherever possible. However, despite our best efforts, we have seen a steady decline in the number of people using the service over the past 18 months.

We have worked closely with adult social care, the borough councils and Surrey County Council and the CCGs to promote the day centres and to address any barriers there may be for referrals but, sadly, this has not led to an increase in people using the service.

This consistently low attendance has meant that we are unable to cover the costs associated with running the centres.

It is important to us that no-one is left without a service which is why we have given as much notice as possible to help people with dementia and their carers find the best possible alternatives.

Our dementia navigators will signpost service users to other providers in the area and we will offer an information day where people can discuss their options with these providers.

There is no question that our dedicated staff and volunteers across all our day centres have provided a wonderful service for many years and we will do our best to support them along with our service users during this difficult time.”

The day centres that are closing over the next six months:

St Mary’s in Byfleet and Haslemere's centre will close on the 31st of March
The Byre, in Bletchingley will close on the 23rd of June.
