Feltham Prison has been heavily criticised in a new report published this morning

The literature by HM Inspectorate of Prisons says key areas of safety have sunk to “the lowest level.”

There are two categories at the prison. A, which houses boys and B, which holds young men.

But both have come under fire.

Violence has risen significantly, as has use of force at a rate of 378 incidents per 100 children since the last inspection when it was 273.

There’s also criticism of staff; not all are trained adequately in dealing with physical restraint.

Staff have been seen to use restraining techniques on children, that are only suitable for adults.

There’s also instances of prisoners saying they feel “unsafe” and only three in five boys stated they had access to a shower daily.

It’s only two months since the prison was taken to court over the case of a boy who had been held in prolonged solitary confinement.

The result of that case is pending.
