Surrey Police release video to warn parents of child grooming

Surrey Police have launched an appeal to parents after a man was jailed for arranging to meet children for sex.

Simon Landsberg was arrested in December and was sentenced to three years in prison on Friday.

Surrey Police have released a video called ‘He thought he knew him’ to warn parents how easy it can be for children to be groomed.

What can you do to protect yourself or your child online?

1. Keep your accounts private. Most websites, apps and social networks have ‘privacy settings’. These help you control who can follow you, what you share and who you share it with.

2. Choose your friends wisely. It’s always best to only share with friends you know in the real world.

3. Remove and report. Make sure you know how to remove content, as well as report content if it’s about you and you’re worried or if
it’s offensive.

4. Know yourself online. Regularly Google yourself to see what other people can find about you, as well as things others might have posted about you.

5. Shut down or delete. If you stop using a website, remember to deactivate your account

6. Report suspicious online behaviour to Surrey Police, anonymously to Crimestoppers or tell a trusted adult.

7. To report any suspicious behaviour or grooming please call Surrey Police on 101 or 999 in an emergency. If you’d prefer not to speak to an officer, you can report anonymously to the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
