"Insensitive" Back Heathrow campaign group in advertising gaffe

Pro Heathrow expansion adverts have popped up in areas around the airport that would most likely be demolished if a third runway went ahead.

Jackie Clark – Basten runs Hair by Jackie in Sipson, and also lives above the property.

Over the weekend, a billboard by pro expansion group Back Heathrow appeared right outside of the shop window.

It's thought the advertising, which is focussing on new jobs for local people, has been carried out by a third party on behalf of the group.

The adverts have now been removed.

Jackie says if it wasn’t so offensive, it would be comical.

Christine Taylor from campaign group Stop Heathrow Expansion, based in the Heathrow Villages, said:

“We have had many complaints from residents over the past four days since this advert appeared.

It is offensive to the who have worked so hard over many generations to make the Heathrow villages successful and vibrant communities.

These adverts are not welcome in our community.

We are very sceptical of the promises made about the number of jobs a third runway at Heathrow would create.

We have Heathrow repeatedly how many new, permanent jobs were created as a result of Terminal Five yet they have refused time and time again.

People will draw their own conclusions as to why they are withholding this information.”

We are awaiting a statement from Back Heathrow.

Could you help a young care leaver in Richmond have a Christmas they'll never forget?

50 young people from Richmond who have just left care homes are going to receive a once in a lifetime Christmas, thanks to a project inspired by Lemn Sissay, the official poet from the 2012 Olympic Games.

The Christmas Dinner will come to Richmond Borough for the first time this December, after Sissay galvanised members of the community to provide a traditional, family-feel Christmas Day for care leavers aged between 18 and 25.

Richmond will be only the second London Borough to make this happen.

The band of Richmond Borough volunteers is led by nurse Sian Thomas who was driven to get involved after a chance meeting with a homeless man almost 12 months ago.

“On Christmas Eve 2016, I met a young man sitting on the ground outside the local Burger King. We had a chat, went for a burger together and had a nice couple of hours,” says Sian, who works for the NHS and lives in Twickenham.

“What was so sad was I could have told you his history before he spoke – 22-years-old, parents alcoholics, had been in care with placements broken down, foster home to foster home, children’s home to children’s home.

"Now totally alone, he was spending Christmas Eve and Day alone. Society had totally failed him. Who knows where people like this young man would spend Christmas Day? It inspired me and a number of other people to do something about it.”

Volunteers are still needed to wrap presents, help decorate the location, do hair, nails and make up for the youngsters, offer raffle prizes and Sian is still desperately searching for a Maître d for the day.

Here, she tells Jackie News how you can help her pull off the best Christmas ever (please click the link below for contact details).
