Dead rat prompts desperate calls to Kingston Council to help end fly-tipping in Tolworth once and for all

People living and working in Broadoaks, a trade alley that runs behind Tolworth Broadway, say the recent find proves that the fly-tip situation is out of hand.

They're calling on Kingston Council to issue all tenants with a letter explaining how to dispose of rubbish and to impose strict fines on those who continually flout the law.

One woman, who asked not to be named, says part of the the problem lies with people who were renting flats above the shops and have no means of getting rid of large items like sofas and mattresses.

She wants the onus to be on the landlords, who she claims sometimes don't realise they are responsible for not just their property, but the road directly outside of it where rubbish accumulates.

Another resident who wanted to be known as Richard says another problem is people coming from other areas specifically to dump rubbish, or fly tip.

Residents and businesses have taken to having annual clean ups, but say they are "losing heart" as the area never stays rubbish free for very long.

Last week, they asked the Council to contact Poundland about its waste disposal, after a rat was spotted near overflowing bins.

At the time, a Kingston spokesperson said: "We urge the caller, and any member of the public, who believes they have seen a rodent in a commercial premises to contact the Kingston Food and Safety team at 0208 547 5000, to provide details so that an Environmental Officer can take the appropriate action and inspect the property.

"An officer has now visited the store and found no evidence of rodents either within or outside the premises.

"We have not received any previous complaints of this nature about this premises. Poundland was also visited in February this year and received the highest 5 rating in the National Food Hygiene Rating scheme."
