Green Councillors welcome introduction of 20mph speed limits across Richmond
The four Green Councillors on Richmond council say they are delighted that a key Green Party policy has been adopted by Richmond Council and have thanked all parties in the borough for supporting the measure.
Monica Saunders, Cllr for Fulwell and Hampton Hill, who has been campaigning for 20mph speed limits with 20s Plenty Richmond since 2013, says:
''We know that 20mph creates safer and calmer streets for everyone. In particular, our youngest and oldest residents welcome slower speeds on our roads. At a time when road casualties in our borough are rising we look forward to the roll out of 20mph and the benefits this will bring, especially to our most vulnerable road users.''
Cllr Richard Bennett, Leader of the Green Group, says:
“A borough-wide 20mph speed limit (with some exceptions) is an important milestone and should be the first of many steps towards re-balancing transport and mobility away from the unsustainable dominance of the motor vehicle. 20mph is a necessary and civilised thing to do, and we applaud it, but there is so much more to do to improve walking and cycling infrastructure and public transport to make our streets more liveable. Green Councillors will continue to support progress and maintain pressure, such as our successful Motions getting Climate Change adopted as an over-arching strategy for Council and the Council to commit to bring forward air quality improvement measures before its Air Quality Action Plan is published.”
