MPs will once again vote on Theresa May’s EU withdrawal plans later.

Meanwhile, Wimbledon’s Conservative MP Stephen Hammond is being urged to support his constituents over Brexit.

Merton’s Lib Dems says he should be backing the majority who supported remain rather than the Prime Minister.

The group’s deputy leader is Carl Quilliam.

Mr Hammond has sent this reply.

Dear Carl,

Thank you for your email of Thursday 7th March regarding a debate on Brexit. This is the first time you have written to me direct to request this.

I have a constant dialogue with my constituents about Brexit, be it through responding to hundreds of emails and letters each week, or through my regular street stalls. I also meet with constituents individually to discuss Brexit, as one of your Liberal Democrat colleagues on Merton Council will testify. This came after one of your local Liberal Democrat activists incorrectly tweeted that I do not meet constituents in this way.

Furthermore, my website is one of the most regularly and comprehensively updated out of all Members of Parliament with my views and news on Brexit, this content is highlighted on social media and via my community email and I always welcome and invite comments on this. That is to ensure my constituents are always fully informed of my work and views. All this information is found at

There can be no argument that my position on Brexit is not public and that I do not engage with my constituents on the matter. Therefore I do not see what a debate, which in reality is aimed at raising the profile of local Liberal Democrats, would achieve.

You state that your motivation to request such a debate is so that I can have a “bold and open conversation” with my constituents. This is exactly what I do week in, week out and is what will continue to do.

Finally, I do not agree with you that my position on a “hard-Brexit” has changed since the election, as I pointed out in my letter to you prior to Christmas. One only needs to read my January Brexit update in which I advocate “a Single Market and Customs Union style solution” to see that.

With best wishes,

Yours sincerely,

Stephen Hammond MP
