Kingston’s Lib Dems are accusing the borough’s Independent Resident’s Group of interfering in community led engagements

The criticism levelled at the KIRG relates to the recent Direction of Travel consultation.

The consultation asked for people’s views on how Kingston should be expanded between now and 2040 to fit the growing population.

But Lib Dem council leader Liz Green says Kingston Independent Resident’s Group has prevented the authority from “getting on and talking” to residents.

She claims the majority view is “drowned” out by the KIRG to ensure only those “who shout the loudest” are heard.

Ms Green says collecting peoples’ views on the proposals have therefore been delayed by the KIRG.

Critics of the plans have been quick to point out that only 7% of residents responded to a borough wide “All in One” survey.

They say the infrastructure for services like medical care and schools isn’t in place to support mass hosing developments.

Mayor of London Sadiq Khan has recommended Kingston builds 1,300 homes per year for the next 5 years to combat a housing shortage.

In response to the Lib Dem press release, Kingston Independent Residents Group Leader, Mary Clark, said:

“I am delighted the Leader Liz Green has realised how important community engagement is.

“A community call in submitted by one of our members highlights the failure to carry out an equalities assessment for those with protected characteristics. This is neither a petty or a minor procedural issue - rather a fundamental principle of our modern society, and evidently one the Kingston Lib Dem’s have forgotten.

“We name no apologies for holding those in power to account and challenging them to engage more with the local community.

“We don’t elect a dictatorship every four years - we believe in challenge, transparency and are saddened that highlighting a failure to protect minorities has been branded by the Lib Dem’s as petty.”
