More patients than expected are dying from sepsis at Kingston Hospital.

The figure is 13.5% above the national average, making it the second worst in the country in those terms.

Sepsis hits when an infection sparks a violent immune system response, and the body attacks its own organs.

A Department of Health and Social Care says “good progress is being made on identifying suspected cases and improving outcomes across the NHS”.

Jane Wilson, Medical Director at Kingston Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, says:

“We are committed to ensuring the highest standards of care for our patients. Our compliance with key performance indicators including sepsis, are reported to the Trust Board and Quality Assurance Committee on a monthly basis and we are achieving national performance targets. The Trust has a very low mortality rate with the Summary Hospital-level Mortality Indicator (SHMI), a nationally reported standardised mortality measure, being 'lower than expected' against the national average, where lower than average is good.

We are aware that we have had higher rates of deaths in which sepsis was a factor and therefore have undertaken detailed analysis of these cases. As well as sepsis being associated with these deaths, many of our patients are elderly and have complex medical conditions at the end of their life. Review of these cases has identified that these deaths were not avoidable, however the Trust always shares learning when any investigation identifies where care could be improved. The Trust has senior medical and nursing leads that drive our improvements in delivering care for patients affected by sepsis."
