Construction work on Ashford High Street is continuing to cause disruption

A public meeting with shop owners and residents has been held by developers Inland Homes and Surrey County Council, as some shops say they’re down 95% on takings.

But the Federation of Small Businesses called the meeting a “continuous shouting match”.

Michael Ramlakhan from community group Ashford Wide says residents are still looking for answers.

Surrey County Council spokesman:

“These are roadworks linked to the redevelopment of the Brooklands College site. The developer has a legal right to work on the road, licensed by Surrey County Council as the highway authority.

“Due to the scale and complexity of these works there is no other way for them to be safely completed without a full road closure.

The council made sure the majority of works were in the school holidays to minimise disruption and agreed supporting signage to warn motorists, provide suitable diversion routes and avoid inappropriate use of local roads for through traffic.

“Highways officers have been attending regular drop in sessions for residents and businesses organised by Inland Homes at the development site office.

The next session is from 6-7pm on 11 September.”

Inland Homes’ spokesperson:

“We are sorry for any inconvenience caused by these essential works.

We are working under a licence provided by Surrey Highways Department and have been working with all parties involved, including Surrey County Council and Spelthorne Council, to schedule these works and limit the disruption the road closure has on residents and local businesses.

Following feedback received at the first of our community drop-in sessions, we installed additional ‘Business Open As Usual’ signs along the site works and have maintained full pedestrian access at all times.

We are working extended hours to complete the project as quickly as possible and are on schedule for completion by mid-October 2019.”
