Richmond council are reminding residents over 40 years old that they are entitled to a free NHS Health Check every five years.
The NHS Health Check is designed to spot early signs of stroke, kidney disease, heart disease, type 2 diabetes or dementia.
In the last six months nearly 6000 residents were invited by their GP to have a check. However, less than half of those took up the offer.
This year, they want even more people to take stock of their health and go and have a free check-up.

An unsafely discarded cigarette is believed to have caused a flat fire in Hammersmith on New Year’s Day.
The Brigade was called just after 10 minutes past 3 in the afternoon and the fire was under control by 4 o’clock.
Officer Ed Hawes said, “It’s absolutely vital you ensure your cigarette is completely out when you’ve finished smoking it.”
Three people left the property before the Brigade arrived.
Thankfully there were no injuries.

There’ll also be a chance to talk to the Police and Crime Commissioner about his plans for Council Tax.

Surrey Police appeal for witnesses
Surrey Police are appealing for witnesses following a serious assault outside Dia Y Noche bar in Epsom in the early hours of Wednesday, 1 January.
They were called to Dia Y Noche bar in The Oaks Square at around 2am following reports of an assault outside the premises. Officers arrived to paramedics treating the victim, a man who was taken to hospital with serious but not life-threatening injuries.

Croydon Council has purchased two more local properties to provide rental income for its frontline services delivered to residents.

Fulham and Brentford will be kicking off one of the biggest sporting days today.
It’s the FA Cup third round this afternoon.

The family of a man that died on New Year’s Eve following a collision in Stanwell have released a statement paying tribute to him.
Dominic Fell was involved in an accident between a white Toyota Yaris and an HGV at the junction of Bedfont Road at 11.39pm.
His family said how he was the most loving, generous, and kind young man you could ever wish to meet.
They are also overwhelmed by the generosity of donations to the go fund me page ‘BA angels’ which has raised over 50 thousand pounds.

An 11 year old girl has discovered a rare first edition copy of Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone on the shelves of Wimbledon Library.
Emily Saiban learned how to identify the book by watching a video on Youtube.
She couldn’t believe it when it ticked all the boxes, including an extra wand in a list on page 53.
The book’s in remarkably good condition given that its been in circulation at the library for 22 years.
It had been part of the Schools Library Service and was only transferred to the open shelves last February.
It’s been borrowed only three times since.
It’s now been taken out of circulation and being kept safe at the offices of Merton Council.

The money will go to local charity Besom, which helps vulnerable households in Dorking, Ashtead and Leatherhead.

It’s been revealed that last year’s RideLondon cycle events raised 11 and a half million pounds for charity.
The news comes as the clock ticks down or entries to this year’s 100 mile ride through Surrey and South West London.
Ride London bills itself as the world’s greatest festival of cycling.
Last year over a hundred thousand riders took part in seven separate events during one August weekend.
It’s a chance for those who ride for work or leisure to rub shoulders with top sportsmen and women like the British Olympic champion Dani Rowe, who helped raise money for the British Heart Foundation.
The organisers at Transport for London and Surrey County Council say over £77 million has been raised for good causes in the past seven years.
The next RideLondon will be on August 15th and 16th, but potential riders will have to be quick as registrations close at 5 o'clock this evening.

Six new designs have been put forward as part of a proposal to renovate a skate park in Leatherhead.

Ewell and Epsom train service is to get back on track.
Trains are set to resume running between Ewell West and Epsom on Monday, following a landslide which has closed the line for three weeks.
The incident occurred on Saturday, 14 December, following heavy rainfall. Engineers found the embankment had failed after becoming saturated.
Around 2,000 tonnes of material from the embankment had to be removed in order to rectify the issue.
Tests will take place on Sunday night to make sure it is safe for trains to run on Monday morning.

An elderly man is recovering after being hurt during an argument between two cyclists in Bushy Park
The man in his sixties, was found on the ground with a badly injured leg by paramedics on December 12th.
He was taken to hospital where he underwent surgery.
Police are keen to find the other cyclist who rode off after the incident.
The Suspect is described as a white man, aged 30-40, tall, well built and clean-shaven. He is said to have spoken with a London accent.

The new leisure centre in New Addington opened today after two years of construction.
The centre was initially budgeted at £17m, but costs since soared to £25m.
The facility will be cashless, with even 25p tokens for the pool changing rooms being charged to a card.
It has a six-lane swimming pool, community halls with capacity for around 300 people, and gym filled with modern equipment.

A Police investigation is underway following the discovery of human remains at an address in Barnes.
Officers attended a property in Nowell Road after concerns had been raised about the welfare of an occupant, which is when the discovery was made.
An analysis of the remains have confirmed they are human, and a post-mortem examination will be scheduled in due course.
Enquiries into the circumstances continue, including to establish the identity of the deceased person.

An appeal has gone out for rail passengers between Streatham and Tulse Hill who may have seen an attempt to steal a phone.
British Transport police want to hear from anyone who witnessed the incident on December 12th, in which three women and a man surrounded a female passenger and tried to snatch her phone after she’d refused to let them use it.

A motorcyclist has died after colliding with a lamppost in Feltham
Police were called yesterday evening to Bedfont Road where the 19-year-old man was pronounced dead at the scene.
No other vehicles are believed to have been involved in the collision.
Next of kin have been notified, but police are asking anyone with information to contact them on 101.

Officers were called on Monday evening to reports of an attack in Downton Avenue.
The victim's injuries aren't thought to be life-threatening.
Forty-three-year-old Mark Brazant, from Ealing, has also been charged with possession of an offensive weapon.

Detectives in Hounslow say homeowners with security cameras could help them identify those behind a brutal stabbing just before Christmas
35 year old Ebrima Chem was found suffering from multiple stab wounds at a residential address in Grove Road in the early hours of December 19th, and died a few hours later.
Police are particularly interested to view CCTV footage from homes in neighbouring Hibernia and Hanworth Roads, as well as Nelson Road and Hospital Bridge Road in Whitton.
Four people have been arrested and two charged as part of the investigation.

Staines Magistrates Court have granted a full closure order for a property in Sunbury
The house in Beechwood Avenue was previously given a partial closure order following reports of anti-social behaviour and drug dealing.
This meant that only people who were named on the property were allowed inside.
However, the anti-social behaviour continued.
This resulted in the court granting a full closure order preventing anyone, including the owner, from entering the property for three months.

Sutton Council says it’s working closely with the Senior Leadership Team of a school in Wallington damaged by a fire
The blaze destroyed a number of classrooms at Bandon Hill Primary School on Christmas Day.
Parents have since been told that pupils in reception and year 1 and 2 will not be able to attend school until the 20th of January.
The council says it’s working to try and ensure the school is “fully operational as quickly as possible”.

CCTV pictures were released after a man was attacked late at night outside Turtle Bay on the High Street.
The man in his 20s is still in hospital with serious and potentially life-changing injuries.

The victim was pushing a pram when she was stabbed three times on Monday evening by an attacker who ran off along Downton Avenue.
She was treated in hospital where her injuries were found to be non life-threatening.

Three teenagers have been convicted by an Old Bailey jury of killing an Uber-eats delivery driver in Battersea.
Iderval Da Silver was fatally punched and kicked last May as he tried to stop his scooter being stolen.
He was left unconscious and died three days later of a bleed to the brain.
19 year-old Jaden Richards from Wandsworth was found guilty of murder. A 16 year old youth was also convicted of murder and a 17 year old of the lesser charge of manslaughter.
All three will be sentenced next month.

A 78-year-old man has gone missing from Sutton.
Carl Ialongo was last seen yesterday afternoon holding a distinctive white walking stick with high visibility stickers and his next of kin’s phone number on.
Police are extremely concerned for his welfare as he suffers from Alzheimer’s and diabetes and has missed his medication.
It’s believed he could be using buses in Morden, Cheam and surrounding areas.
Anyone with information on his whereabouts is being asked to contact police on 101.

Officers were called to Carshalton Park Road shortly after 2pm to reports of collision between a car and a child.
The child was found with a leg injury, but his condition has been assessed as non-life threatening.

Three die in fatal accident near Heathrow

Three people have died after a collision involving a car and a lorry, in Stanwell last night.
The accident took place on Bedfont Road on the junction of Long Lane near Heathrow Airport.
The lorry left the road and ended up in the Longford River.
Two men and a woman all in their twenties who were in the car died at the scene. A 25 year-old woman, also in the car is in hospital in a serious condition.

An accident in Stanwell involving a car and a lorry has resulted in four people being seriously injured
Officers were called to Bedfont Road just after 11.30 last night after reports of a crash at the junction with Long Lane.
It’s believed the lorry swerved off the road and entered the Longford River.
The lorry driver was unhurt but two men and two women in the car suffered serious injuries.
Roads in the immediate area are closed.
Police are appealing for information.

Surrey Police have released images of two men they would like to speak to following a burglary in Epsom
  
At around 6:30pm on the 23rd of December two handbags were stolen from the kitchen of a house on Bannow Close.
A bank card from one of the handbags was later used at Costcutter, in Vale Road shortly before 6:45pm.

A couple who led the campaign to become civil partners rather than husband and wife are the first to enter one of the mixed-sex unions
Rebecca Steinfeld and Charles Keidan won a legal bid at the Supreme Court last year to legalise the ceremony for heterosexual couples.
The option was only previously available to same-sex partners.
Speaking at the Register Office in Kensington and Chelsea, Rebecca says a traditional marriage wasn't for them.

Residents in Richmond are being reminded that they can recycle their real Christmas tree at the beginning of January
They will be picked up on the scheduled garden waste collection day for your street between Monday 6 January and Friday 17 January.
Trees should be placed outside the front of your property and must be visible from the kerbside without blocking the pavement.
This service is free, and you do not need a garden waste contract to have your tree collected and recycled.
You can also take your tree to one of several sites across the borough.

Brentford Football Club is mourning the death of former player Michael Block
Better known as Mickey, the 79-year-old died before Christmas.
Block started at Chelsea when he was just 17, and went on to join Brentford in 1962, helping the team eventually move from Division 4 to Division 3 in 1966.

Richmond Council has agreed to recommission its children’s services to be delivered by Achieving for Children until 2026
It follows a decision at an Education and Children’s Services Committee meeting.
After considering several recommissioning options, the decision was taken to extend the contract jointly with Kingston for another five years.

A woman's been stabbed by a man in front of her child in Streatham Hill.
The 36-year-old was targeted while pushing her pram along Downton Avenue yesterday evening.
Police say it was an unprovoked attack, which left the victim in hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
No-one's been arrested.

Passengers on South Western Railways are being promised a smoother ride in the New Year.
The company, whose trains run from waterloo to destinations in South-West London, Surrey and Hampshire, is planning to introduce 90 new trains from the summer.
It’s better news for travellers who’ve been hit throughout December by a strike over the role of guards on commuter services.
South Western Railways are among nine companies planning to introduce a thousand new trains. 12 of those will run Heathrow Express services to and from Paddington.

An exhibition celebrating five centuries of history through the lens of one road in Richmond, will be curated by the Museum of Richmond.
Thanks to Civic Pride funding, the exhibition will focus on the social history of Queen’s Road named after Queen Victoria.
It will tell the story of how the road developed from a muddy track through the countryside to a thriving modern community.
It will do this by looking at the lives of the residents, as well as the buildings they lived in.

Detectives continue to investigate the fatal stabbing of 60-year-old John Kennett in Thornton Heath.
Police were called at around 9:30pm on the 23rd of December to reports of a stabbing in Woodcroft Road.
Mr Kennett was found outside a residential address suffering from stab wounds. He was pronounced dead at the scene at 9:49pm.
Police believe the victim and suspect were known to each other.
Anyone with information is urged to contact police on 101.

Police were called to Downton Avenue at 5.20pm to reports that a woman in her 30s had been stabbed.
Her injuries are not thought to be life-threatening or life changing.
No arrests have been made and enquires are continuing.

Surrey Police are looking to speak to two men seen in the Vale Road Costcutter store in Epsom last week after a stolen bank card was used there
Last Monday, two handbags were stolen from a house in Bannow Close at around 6:30 pm, with a bank card from one of the bags being used around 15 minutes later.
The men are described as being white and in their twenties, with one being around 5ft 8 with shaved blond hair and a beard, and the other around 6ft tall.

Surrey Police are investigating after a 50-year-old woman had racial abuse shouted at her in Camberley

The incident happened at around midnight on the 11th December on Charles Street.
Surrey Police would like to speak to two men and a woman, aged in their twenties, who were in the area at the time, to understand what happened.
The woman was wearing an olive coloured coat.

A British Airways passenger had to be handcuffed after climbing over sleeping travellers while flying from Texas to Heathrow.
William Clegg allegedly broke free from the restraint and tried to headbutt a flight attendant, then dragged them to the floor.
The 30-year-old is also accused of assaulting five cabin crew members and smoking on the plane.
Earlier, he had allegedly put a T-shirt over a female cabin crew member’s head before pulling another member of staff to the ground.
He is due to appear at Isleworth Crown Court in January.

They had failed to win any of their four previous fixtures in the Championship, and they were second best for much of the first half.
But Bowen's late free kick found Irvine unmarked at the far post.
The Australian gave the Tigers all three points to lift them up to 12th in the Championship table, with QPR falling to 15th.

Two men have been jailed after Surrey Police found cocaine during a vehicle stop in Esher.
27-year-old Albano Memaj and 23-year-old Eligon Qafa were arrested after a vehicle stop check on Esher High Street on 30th October.
Both were jailed at Guildford Crown Court on 16th December after they both admitted to the possession of cocaine with intent to supply.
Borough Commander, Inspector Bert Dean said this case shows how “effective [their] proactive stop searches can be”.

From April hospitals in England will be required to provide free parking for disabled blue badge holders, parents of sick children staying overnight and staff working night shifts.
The Department for Health and Social Care has announced that the new regime will be rolled out within months, making sure all hospitals follow the same rules.
But they’ve failed to give details of how much it would cost to scrap parking charges for these groups.
Last year NHS trusts in England made more than £226-million pound from car parks and Kingston Hospital, Epsom & St Helier and Surrey and Sussex Health Care were among 53 trusts that increased their car parking charges.

A Nigerian prisoner who scribed a plea in a Christmas card found by a girl in tooting says he and a fellow inmate wrote in more than one.
The man, known only as Antoine, claims they wrote similar messages in 10 boxes of cards from inside a Chinese jail.
He heard his note had been found after he was released from prison two months ago after a four-year stretch for alleged contract fraud.
The men decided to act last summer after a new warden said foreign prisoners would join Chinese ones in forced labour.

A railway line that passes through Coulsdon south and East Croydon has suffered significant damage after a landslip during heavy rainfall.
The track between Tonbridge and Redhill closed after the River Eden burst its banks and will stay that way "for the foreseeable future".
Fiona Taylor, of Network Rail, said there had been "a significant earthworks failure" which is "a huge challenge in a very remote location".
Engineers said it can’t be fixed until the ground stopped moving.
Southern rail said it’s working closely with Network Rail and waiting to receive an estimate of when the line can reopen.

The family of a man shot dead in front of his wife and child on Christmas Eve in Battersea have spoken of their heartbreak.
Flamur Beqiri, a Swedish national, aged 36, was killed in Battersea Church Road in what police say could have been a "targeted attack", yards from his home.
In a statement, his family said they were in "shock and grieving" and asked for their privacy to be respected.
No arrests have been made and police continue to appeal for witnesses.

An unattended candle is believed to have caused a fire at a house converted into flats in Mitcham
Firefighters assisted a man from the affected flat in Grenfell Road yesterday morning.
He was suffering from smoke inhalation and was taken to hospital.
A small part of the flat was damaged by the fire.
Six further people from neighbouring flats left before the Brigade arrived.
A spokesperson for London Fire Brigade reminded the public that:
“Candles are one of the most common causes of fire. They should never be left unattended and kept away from curtains and anything else that can easily catch fire.”

Around 14 prison staff have been treated in hospital after a riot broke out in Feltham Young Offenders institute on Friday
A female prison officer almost lost her ear after a group attack by 16 young inmates.
The offenders carried out the pre-meditated attack going as far as coating themselves in oil to prevent being apprehended.
The Ministry of Justice has said no-one was seriously injured and the disturbance was brought under control within 25 minutes.

The game was settled by a first half goal from Millwall’s Aiden O'Brien after just eight minutes.

Domestic fire reported at a house near Esher Station this afternoon
It is understood everyone involved in the incident is safe. Allegedly eight fire engines and many other emergency response vehicles arrived at the scene.
A local witness claims that the cause of the fire was electrical and started in the loft.
Surrey Fire Brigade have been asked for a statement but currently are not in a position to comment. Updates to follow.

There has been a serious assault in Staines in the early hours of last Sunday.

A man was reportedly stabbed in the stomach outside Turtle Bay in Staines High Street.
The victim, who is in his twenties remains in hospital with serious and potentially life changing injuries.
Police continue to appeal for information and have released CCTV images of two men thought to be connected to the incident.

Patients are being offered the chance to see if virtual reality can make a difference during an operation?
Orthopaedic surgeons at St George’s Hospital in Tooting are trialling virtual reality headsets during regional anaesthetic surgery.
It is hoped that the technique will help reduce stress and anxiety amongst patients during upper limb surgery.
If the trial is a success, doctors hope it will be adopted more widely.

Thirty-five-old Ebrima Cham, who was known as Brim, was murdered at a flat in Grove Road.
Police believe it was a targeted attack.
Thirty-nine-year-old Simon Emmons, from Whitton, has been charged with murder and possession of an offensive weapon.
He’ll have a bail hearing on Tuesday.
