A firefighter has come to the rescue in Carshalton . . . but not in the way you might have thought.

Ian Tobin was on hand to deliver a baby just 200 metres from the entrance to St Helier Hospital.

The firefighter was on secondment with London Ambulance Service when he answered a call to a woman in labour.

He was aiming to get his patient to Croydon University Hospital, but the little girl was born, safe and well, before he had the chance.
