Transport for London has confirmed that projects like Kingston’s Go Cycle scheme have been paused.
It says that the Coronavirus pandemic means it has to prioritise getting people back on the streets to work safely and quickly.
TfL is currently pushing its Streetspace for London initiative which centres on the ability for people to social distance on London's streets.
Although paused, TfL says existing schemes like Go Cycle Kingston could be incorporated into Streetspace for London, or delayed.
Last week, Lib Dem MP for Richmond Park Sarah Olney said in a newsletter to constituents, that the delivery of the remainder of the Go Cycle scheme could be affected by the impact of Coronavirus on TfL’s funds.
Kingston Council has since confirmed it is yet to receive this year’s portion of Go Cycle funding from TfL.
The scheme is worth approx £30 million to Kingston in total.
Sam Monck, TfL’s Head of Investment Delivery Planning for Healthy Streets, said: “We’re working closely with London’s boroughs to rapidly create the extra space needed for more people to walk and cycle, through our Streetspace for London programme.
“TfL’s financial situation and the need to prioritise London’s recovery has meant that the design, development and funding of pre-existing projects has been paused, including borough schemes funded by us. Many of these will be brought forward and accelerated under the Streetspace for London programme, whereas other schemes may be delivered later than planned. We’re committed to creating a safe network of walking and cycling infrastructure in Kingston and will continue to work with Kingston Council to confirm funding and do this as quickly as possible.”
