Deborah James, the health campaigner best known as Bowel Babe, has died

She passed away earlier at her parent’s home in Woking.

Almost 43,000 people are diagnosed with bowel cancer each year in the UK.

More than 16,500 people die from the disease making it the UK’s second biggest cancer killer.

40 year old Deborah James was just 35 and a deputy headteacher at a school in Staines when she was diagnosed in 2016.

Her symptoms had included losing weight, blood in her stools and feeling overwhelming tiredness – but they were dismissed as IBS.

Deborah began charting her cancer journey writing for The Sun and presenting  the You, Me and the Big C podcast for BBC Radio 5.

She also launched the No Butts campaign with ITV’s Lorraine Kelly to encourage people to check their stools for signs of bowel cancer.

The mother of two announced to her social media followers on May the 9th that she was receiving hospice care at home.

She received a home visit from Prince William who presented her with her newly bestowed Damehood.

The honour was bestowed upon her by the Queen after her newly established Bowel Babe fund topped the £1million mark in 24 hours.

It has now raised more than £6 million and counting.

The money will help Cancer Research UK fund clinical trials and research into personalised medicine for cancer patients.
