Surrey avenged their defeat in the 2011 rugby County Championship Shield Final as they scored six tries in a resounding victory over Leicestershire at the Twickenham Stadium yesterday.

Cable raises prospect of coalition break-up

The Lib Dem Business Secretary Vince Cable has raised the prospect of the coalition breaking up before the next general election.

The Twickenham MP says there needs to be "disengagement" between his party and the Conservatives.

He claims both need time to establish their own separate platforms and identity before going to the country in 2015.

Fans of Rugby Union have experienced a weekend of exciting and nail-biting action.

Congratulations must first go to Harlequins. They led the Premiership from the start of the season; triumphed over Northampton Saints to get into their first ever Premiership final; and on Saturday lifted the trophy after a tense battle against eight-time finalists Leicester Tigers: Quins 30 - 23 Leicester Tigers.

The action at Twickenham continued on Sunday with the first outing of the new-look England team under the newly-appointed Head Coach Stuart Lancaster.

The fans were not to be disappointed. After boo's from the crowd reverberated around the stadium when England decided to kick their first two penalties rather than drive for the line, they changed their tactics. They played with ball in hand and the points piled on the scoreboard. The final whistle blew England 57 - 26 Barbarians.

To round off the weekend and not miss out on their glory, Surrey beat Leicestershire in the County Championship Shield: Surrey 42 - 12 Leicester.

Putney primary school consultation

Residents in Putney will have more time to respond to a consultation on proposals for a new primary school on the vacant Putney Hospital site.

The council's resubmitting its planning application for a new 420 pupil primary school and a 50 place nursery for children living in the west of the borough.

If the plans are approved, the original timetable for the opening of the school and nursery won’t change and children would begin to be admitted in September 2015.

750 thousand pound pot for local charities

A community café, a meals on wheels service and a scout hut have all received part of a 750 thousands pound pot of cash.

The money was distributed by the Surrey County Councils leader according to the councils communications department.

17 schemes in all took a share of the money.

Bravery award for Croydon robbery

A man who was shot in the stomach when he tried to foil a robbery at a Croydon jeweller in 2009 has been honoured for his bravery.

Colin Thomas, who was 24 at the time of the robbery, received the Binney Award at the Police Public Bravery Awards at the service’s annual conference in Manchester.

Mr Thomas was working in the shop when the robbers threatened customers and staff with hammers. They ran away when he chased them but one of the thieves turned and fired at him at point blank range.

New test track for Headley Court

Injured soldiers at the military rehabilitation unit at Headley Court in Leatherhead have a new test track to help them learn how to use prosthetic limbs.

The outdoor circuit’s been built by staff from Sutton and East Surrey Water.

It includes paths, steps and ramps made from various materials and set on cambers and slopes to improve the soldiers’ motor skills.

Croydon wins Portas Prize

Croydon’s been named as one of 12 towns to receive funding under the so-called Portas Pilots scheme.

The project was set up by retail expert Mary Portas to help revitalise run down towns.

370 applications competed for the grants which total 100-thousand pounds.

Croydon wants to ‘transform the riot stricken area’s historic Old Town market into a thriving market and cultural quarter’.

Nine people have been arrested today by Customs officers at Heathrow on suspicion of drug and cigarette smuggling.

Around 90 investigators from HMRC raided a warehouse at the airport.

8 residential and three business properties in Stanmore, West Drayton, Southall and Frimley in Surrey were also searched.

Man jailed for sex attacks

A former TA Captain from Teddington has been jailed for a series of rapes and sexual assault.

Forty one year old Brian Witty was found guilty of 4 attacks across South West and central London.

Witty will initially serve a minimum sentence of 8 years for the offences which happened between 2005 and 2008.

He’ll only be released later if he is proven to no longer be a danger to women.

Police appeal after collision in Woking

Police are appealing for witnesses after a road traffic collision involving a child pedestrian in the Maybury area of Woking.

It happened yesterday afternoon in Princess Road when a 6 year old boy was in collision with a silver Vauxhall Corsa.

The child was taken to St George’s Hospital in Tooting with head and abdominal injuries.

He’s currently in a serious but stable condition.

Police believe abduction attempts 'not linked'

Police in Kingston continue to investigate three alleged abduction attempts reported around schools in the last week.

Originally detectives thought that two of the cases were linked but say that’s now unlikely.

Police would also like to hear from anyone who may have seen or comforted a child in distress at Knollmead Primary School in Tolworth on Monday morning.

Detectives are encouraging parents and the wider community to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity.

Councils in Epsom & Ewell, Woking and Tandridge consult residents

Residents of three Surrey boroughs are being invited to attend meetings of the county council’s local committees next month.

The local committees were set up in 2002 to bring the council’s decision-making closer to local residents.

They make decisions on certain local services, particularly highways, and monitor the quality of all services locally.

Epsom & Ewell, Woking and Tandridge Local Committees will hold meetings in June.

The event marks International Missing Childrens’ Day.

Surrey Search and Rescue is offering its support by re tweeting a different missing child appeal every half an hour throughout the day.

140 thousand youngsters disappear in the UK every year.

Two charity workers will be going the extra mile this Sunday.

Emily Mayer and Sarah Hollands are taking part in The Bupa London 10,000, a 10K run through the capital.

All proceeds will go to Shooting Star CHASE Children’s Hospices based in Hampton and Guildford, where they work.

Since the two hospices merged last year, there has been a 15% increase in the amount of families that need looking after.

The girls told us the run is about backing the new personal best campaign, where fundraisers are urged to push themselves to the max.

Tooting thief caught red handed

A thief has been caught red handed stealing from a parking pay & display machine in Tooting Broadway.

Vasile Jurisnicz was jailed for 4 months after undercover officers spotted him acting suspiciously.

He was seen tampering with a machine and officers found a quantity of coins in his pocket along with a piece of equipment he had used to break open the machine.

London Welsh 'disappointed'

Police presence increased outside schools in Kingston

Kingston police have stepped up their patrols around schools following three reported incidents of strangers approaching children.

On Thursday 17th May staff in a Surbiton primary school alerted police after a girl was allegedly approached by a man and a woman in the grounds of their school.

A second incident was reported on Monday 21st May at another primary school in Surbiton, where a man alegedly grabbed hold of a boy just after 9am. The boy was able to break free and alert staff. It is believed a woman was also present, described as white of slim build with long black hair wearing a red hooded top and red trousers.

The third reported incident occurred later that afternoon around 3.15pm at a primary school in Worcester Park. A man was seen on a push bike weaving in and out of cars in the car park. He cycled away when confronted.

In two of the incidents the male suspect is described as white in his twenties wearing a woolly hat.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Kingston Police.
