Underage sale leaves firework trader out of sky rocket

A trader who flouted firework laws by selling to an underage shopper and storing fireworks dangerously has been fined over £4,000 following a cross borough trading standards investigation.

Tony Copland of Brighton Road in Banstead and owner of All Floors Limited and The Floor Store Limited in Sutton pleaded guilty to 16 charges at Croydon Magistrates Court.

The prosecution follows many issues with Mr Copland in relation to the sale and storage of fireworks.

In November, Trading Standards officers from Sutton and Croydon took part in a test purchase exercise.

During the test, a 15-year-old volunteer was sold a £20 box of fireworks by a member of staff at The Floor Store Limited before handing them over to officers.

When Mr Copland was asked about the sale, he claimed that he didn’t know who the seller was and that he was covering at the shop because there had been a recent theft.

Additionally, when Trading Standards officers were questioning Mr Copland in his store they also noticed open boxes of live sparklers sitting on the counter and fireworks leaning against the wall.

On other visits by officers in Sutton and Croydon to Mr Copland’s shops fireworks were found to be stored unsafely and in breach of the law.

Mr Copland was charged on Tuesday for 16 offences - eight as a company and eight as an individual.

He was fined £100 for each offence totalling £1,600 and also £2,500 costs and £120 victim surcharge.

All fireworks seized will be destroyed.
