22:02 As counting for the general election begins, the Exit Poll is forecasting the Conservatives as the largest party.

The poll for Sky News, the BBC and ITV News puts David Cameron's party on 316 - ten short of an overall majority and way ahead of Labour on 239.

The predicted SNP surge seems to have materialised - Nicola Sturgeon's party is predicted to win 58 seats.

But the Liberal Democrat vote appears to have collapsed with Nick Clegg's party forecast to win just 10 seats - according to the poll by Ipsos MORI and GfK NOP.

UKIP and the Greens are predicted to win 2 each, Plaid Cymru 4, and others 19.

22:00 The polls closed at 10pm. Here's a reminder of what happened in 2010.

21:51 Pupils at Tolworth Girls School will be closely following their own alternative election over the next 24 hours.

Representatives from years 7 to 10 have created four of their own political parties complete with manifestos and a ballot vote this morning.

Provisional results can be expected by registration tomorrow.
