#NewMalden iconic Fountain Roundabout "to be replaced by Go Cycle route."

Residents at a meeting about the proposed "Go Cycle" scheme were up in arms last night after Kingston council confirmed it is to move the Fountain Roundabout to make way for the scheme.

The £30 million Go Cycle programme includes 10 development schemes. One project, Portsmouth Road, is under construction.

The Fountain Roundabout will now be transformed into a crossroads junction.

But residents have asked us why every household was not consulted on the plans, and why it seems the consultation could only be accessed online; the council has verified some residents were contacted via letter, but only those in the vicinity of the development.

One 92 year old resident, who wished not to be named, told us she has no access to the internet, so was effectively "barred from the consultation."

In a press release, the council said; “We want to encourage more people to cycle and walk by providing better and safer cycle links, footways and crossings throughout the borough. Go Cycle will bring benefits to all residents in the borough, improving public spaces for everyone's enjoyment. Moving around the borough will be easier thanks to better infrastructure and access by foot and bike to community facilities, workplaces, shops, schools, attractions and open spaces in key locations will be improved.”

A number of residents claim they only found out about last night's meeting via the Malden and Coombe Heritage group.

This resident, John Creasey, says his concerns were ignored.

James Giles is Editor in Chief at Coombe Monthly, a community service. He explains to Jackie's Lucy Mayer why he is opposed to the plans.
