£100m worth of fraud nationwide has been prevented through a new scheme to tackle in banks

Staff have been trained to spot potential cases and request a rapid police response.

Surrey have had 328 calls through the scheme since it was launched in August 2018.

Bernadette Lawrie BEM, Financial Safeguarding Officer, Surrey Police told Radio Jackie:

“Being the victim of fraud can have long-lasting and devastating effects on older and vulnerable people so it’s good to see that just 18 months after we introduced the banking protocol in Surrey, it’s making a real impact.

“328 attempts to commit fraud have failed due to alert bank staff and we are really grateful to them for their vigilance.

Importantly, once the police know a vulnerable person came close to being a victim of fraud, we visit them to offer them our advice and reassurance to keep them safe from this callous crime in future.

“Fraud attempts are common sadly. The good news is a simple chat from time to time to make sure elderly and more vulnerable friends, family and neighbours know what to be wary of – and know they can come to you if they get any worrying or out of the blue calls - can be really effective.

“My advice is always to be suspicious of any calls, texts or emails purporting to be from the police or a bank asking for your personal or financial details, or for you to transfer money. Never give money to anyone you don’t know or trust and hang up the phone if you’re asked to do so.”
