A multimillion-pound expansion of the Wimbledon tennis championships is threatening its green and tranquil surroundings.

The Capability Brown Society has labelled plans to build an 8,000-seat show court and 38 smaller courts as “disastrous”.

The expansion plans by the All England Lawn Tennis Club would take place in the registered grade II Wimbledon Park designed by Brown.

The club is seeking to develop Wimbledon Park golf club, opposite the grounds, after the golf members accepted a £65m bid for the site.

If given planning permission, the new courts would allow Wimbledon to host qualifying matches instead of in Roehampton.
