Croydon Council has welcomed extra government funding towards the cost of caring for unaccompanied asylum-seeking children.

Over the last decade more than 5000 children arrived in Croydon, as it serves as a major UK entry point alongside Heathrow and Dover.

A £9m shortfall each year has built up over since 2015 due to the difference between government funding and actual costs.

An extra £4m is now expected in addition to the existing funding to care for up to 70 new arrivals every month.
