New “smart” solar powered waste bins are being trialled in Richmond.

The council says the release of lockdown has resulted in an influx of visitors to parks and open spaces bringing an increase in litter.

Nine of the new bins being installed across the borough will be fitted with sensors that send an alert to the council when they are full.

They can be found in places including the Thames Towpath neat Richmond Bridge.
