The new definition of a kilo now has legal weight


The seven SI units, which measure things such as force, electrical current, and distance, are now based on natural constants rather than lumps of platinum.

While the new units were brought in last year, the government has now enshrined the changes in law.

Richard Brown, from the National Physical Laboratory in Teddington, says it “future-proofs” our measurements.
