Epsom’s MP says he’s disappointed NHS bosses have decided in principal to build a new hospital in Sutton

The move, agreed on Friday, means acute services will be moved from Epsom and St Helier hospitals to the new site.

Chris Grayling says he has always understood the “attraction” of building a brand-new centre for the area, but the location is wrong.

He also says the £500 million investment would have stretched further at Epsom.

Construction costs are expected to increase in light of the Covid-19 pandemic.

The new hospital will be situated in Belmont, alongside the Royal Marsden and Institute of Cancer Research.

It will have 496 beds and will provide emergency care, including resuscitation, paediatrics and maternity.
