Researchers will look into how the “Stay at Home” message affected cancer diagnoses.

The 18-month project will look at if lockdown and the suspension of cancer screening programmes sent a message that “cancer can wait”.

Dr Katriina Whitaker from the University of Surrey says seeing how COVID-19 affects early diagnoses means that they can think through “life-saving mitigation strategies”.

The scientists will look at the time taken to visit the GP, attitudes to screening, and preferred ways of getting public health information.
