A project is underway to reintroduce one of the UK’s fastest declining mammals back to the Hogsmill River.

The water vole, or water rat, was best characterised as “Ratty” in the classic tale The Wind in the Willows.

4,000 people across Kingston have been involved in mapping a suitable home; the species was last spotted there in 2014.

A “vole ranger” will be appointed to work with a volunteer force to bring the species back to its native habitat.
