The main suspect is in a critical condition in hospital after a police officer was shot in Croydon
A police officer's died after being shot at a custody centre in Croydon.
He was attacked as a man was being detained at the centre in Windmill Lane at 2.15 this morning.
It’s believed the main suspect, a 23-year-old man, then turned the gun on himself.
He’s in a critical condition in hospital.
The force says that “no police firearms were discharged in the incident”.
It’s currently unknown if the person had just been arrested, or was returning on bail and meeting with officers.
An investigation has been opened into the murder, and the Independent Office for Police Conduct will conduct a separate inquiry.
Croydon Central MP Sarah Jones says its “absolutely shocking news” and she’s speaking to the police about the details of the incident.
Policing minister Kit Malthouse has offered the government's condolences to the officer's family and friends.
