One of Kingston's most ancient sites is going to be delicately refurbished.

The council has secured £900,000 from a bid into the Get Britain Building Fund administered by the Mayor of London.

A substantial part of the funding will go to the refurbishment of the basement of the John Lewis site.

The Medieval Undercroft is home to ancient remains of a bridge over the Thames.

This was at a time when the only other bridge nearby was London bridge until the building of Putney bridge in 1729.
