A psychiatrist at Priory’s Roehampton hospital has outlined the benefits of cutting down on alcohol ahead of dry January.

An estimated 6.5 million people nationally will be going alcohol-free next month, compared to around 3.9 million last year.

Dr Niall Campbell says the older we get, the more sensitive to alcohol the body becomes and you’re more likely to experience hangovers.

Recent figures show that 1 in 20 people are drinking more than 50 units a week, which is more than five bottles of wine, a figure that is 50% higher than in March.
