The legitimate scheme offers a one-off £150 rebate to those living in homes in council tax Bands A to D.
However, reports suggest fraudsters are using this as a way to try and obtain sensitive personal information.
Recent instances involve cold callers contacting residents offering to process the payment if they reveal their bank details.
The council says it will never ask for bank details by phone or email.
