Zac Goldsmith was backing Boris Johnson in the leadership race based on his winning 2019 manifesto.
On Twitter he claimed many Conservative members would have also backed Mr Johnson’s return but were worried about a backlash.
Mr Goldsmith says a general election is “morally unavoidable”.
