The RSPCA says the number of abandoned pets in England and Wales is up 25% compared to last year

Covid and cost of living fears mean fewer people considered taking on a pet with the number of rehomed animals down 10% annually.

Battersea Dogs and Cats Home estimates it cost an average of £2,000 a year to keep a dog.

The charity says "the true costs will vary dramatically depending on the size, age, type and health of the animal".
