People in Kingston are being told to expect some disruption to rubbish collections today, after a fire at the Villiers Road recycling centre

The brigade was called just before 5am.

Around 50 tonnes of waste was alight, and residents nearby were urged to shut their windows due to the smoke.

There are no reports on any injuries, and the damage is believed to be minor.

The cause is under investigation.

Statement from Kingston Council.

There was a fire in the early hours of today  at the Villiers Road Waste Transfer Station in Kingston, which adjoins the Household Reuse and Recycling Centre (HRRC).Ten fire crews attended the scene and the fire was quickly brought under control. We would like to thank the fire service for their quick and effective response.

There were no injuries. Damage to the site is being assessed but appears to be relatively minor. The cause of the fire will be investigated.

The waste transfer station and the adjoining Household Reuse and Recycling Centre are currently closed.  Contingency measures are being implemented to limit the impact this will have on recycling and waste collections.  However, residents in Kingston whose collections are scheduled for today (Wednesday) should expect some disruption: collections may happen later than usual or may not take place at all.  Households affected should leave their recycling and waste bins out at the front of their properties and our crews will get to them as soon as they can.

Residents who have a booking to visit the Villiers Road Household Reuse and Recycling Centre (HRRC) today will need to re-book their visit for another day as the site is likely to remain closed for the rest of the day.  Those with bookings for today will be contacted directly.  We are sorry for any inconvenience this will cause.
